Why the numbers matter

Only about 15% of children and youth in Saskatchewan are active enough. Closing that gap is a shared responsibility between schools, homes and communities, and the school day is one of the best places to start.

Children also spend a lot of time on screens. According to Active Healthy Kids Canada, many spend more than 40 hours a week in front of one, which makes planned movement during the school day even more valuable.

What activity at school can do

  • Creates a sense of belonging
  • Increases excitement for learning
  • Improves concentration and academic performance
  • Supports classroom management
  • Improves punctuality and attendance
  • Reduces discipline problems

The 30-30-30 approach

Saskatchewan in motion promotes 30 minutes of activity at school, 30 minutes at home and 30 minutes in the community. Together they add up to 90 minutes of activity a day.

Take action

Every minute counts

Short bursts of activity during class, at recess and between subjects all add up. Small changes in how a school day is organized can make a measurable difference.
